Be prepared! The year 2006 and beyond will be
a period of living dangerously. The US will struggle to
prevent civil war in Iraq. Nuclear brinkmanship will
intensify in Iran. The global economy will slow, perhaps
sharply if any of the mounting risks to stability hits hard.
Risks are many: a house-price bust, higher oil prices, a
dollar collapse escalating terrorism or - a looming
nightmare - a bird flu pandemic.
For once, economic pessimists outnumber optimists in the
expectations for the year ahead. Market determinism is no
longer one fundamentally limited to the traditional supply
and demand forces; there is now greater uncertainty and
unpredictability in the marketplace. The state of
demand is in a constant flux; a strategic chaos prevails and
a changing world is forging ahead, seemingly invoking the
ghosts of Darwinism for industries.
Political determinism is now vigourously re-shaping the
global marketplace as traditional markets resign to the
pressures of globalization and liberalization. But they also
become vulnerable to the realities of the politics and
geography of the world.
The global war against terror led by US has institutionalized new
and wide range of trade practices worldwide. The impact,
intended or otherwise can be sometimes
devastating, occasionally dramatic but always painfully
necessary for sustainable business development.
The world is changing unannounced, and hurriedly; the
trading regimes will no longer be the same because of the
overwhelming dominance of geopolitics that will determine
and shape the marketplace. There is a critical need that
businesses be part of this inevitable change process; the
specter of Darwinism looms large and will make its
selection, naturally. Simply, Adapt, or Perish!
